According to a World Health Organization (WHO) report released yesterday, processed meats such as bacon, sausages and ham do cause cancer. The report said that eating 50g of processed meat a day or less than two slices of bacon increased the chances of developing colorectal cancer by 18%. The report also said that red meats were probably carcinogenic but that there was limited evidence, although it did say that there were also health benefits to eating meat.

Processed meats includes bacon, sausages, hot dogs, salami, corned beef, beef jerk, ham, canned meat and meat-based sauces. The report said that the chemicals involved in the processing and high temperature cooking, such as on a barbecue, which creates carcinogenic chemicals help to increase the risk of cancer.

The WHO has come to the conclusion that processed meats cause cancer on the advice of its International Agency for Research on Cancer, which assesses the best available scientific evidence before presenting their findings. The Ultimate Fundraiser believes in prevention and living a healthy lifestyle, here’s some food for thought, how about cutting back on carcinogenic food to start, whatever it maybe.
