Here at The Ultimate Fundraiser, we are sports fanatics! There are a number of staff who regularly attend University Of Hawaii sporting events including football. Tonight was the last game of the season and we are looking forward to next year because we haven’t had much to cheer for this year. We did end on a high note by winning the last 2 games, but being 3-9 on the season is very disappointing for a life time fan. But I do have to say, that ending the season with 2 wins, does give me some hope for next year.
I have to say, I was excited at the beginning of the season to have Norm Chow as coach, but not so much anymore. I do have to say though, that I can’t stand some of his decisions in this day and age of football. A few of his main problems is his incessant need to run the ball every first down, or the lack of will to score at the end of the first half and even more importantly, to continue to use Schroeder over and over again when everyone knows Higgins is way better at quarterback. He reminds me of Al Davis, the deceased owner of the Oakland Raiders. They are both have been geniuses at the game of football for decades and decades. They both study the game inside and out all the while help out many young men progress into incredible players and pillars of society. BUT, I do have to say that they are/were both past their prime in the ever changing game of football.
Everyone will agree that they know the game of football just as much as anybody on this earth and they both have been extremely successful for years including contributing to the game of college and professional football before I was even born. But, they both ran into the same problem…the game just outgrew them! Each and every year the game of football at every level progresses where the guys become bigger and faster along with ever changing formations, plays and trickeries. The problem is that like Al Davis, it seems like Norm Chow is still living in the 80’s & 90’s era of football while all the younger coaches are keeping up with the times and modernizing the game.
Chow may not have the best players this year and we all know he didn’t recruit any of the current players, but while watching all the games this year like I have done since I attended my first game at 6 days old, I am very upset at his play calling. Sure, these aren’t his players, but allowing a team to put up over 350 yards or rushing in a single game or allowing a running back to rush for 7 touchdowns or even allow a team to dominate us by setting a new record and putting up 69 in our house in our very own stadium is all absolutely ridiculous even if it is his very first year. Tag that along with our schedule for next year which is only part of the way done, but it doesn’t look like we have much of a chance again seeing as how we are already playing USC, Oregon State & BYU and those are only 3 of the 5 teams we have scheduled so far. Let’s just say, I don’t see it to be a very promising season for next year either. By the way, please don’t get me wrong, I would love to eat crow and win 10 games next year and play in our own bowl game, but I just don’t see that happening.
I really want UH to do a lot better next year than they have done this year. I also want UH to make their own bowl game so I actually have a team to root for on Christmas Eve. That goes without saying. But, I do have to admit I’m slightly scared to see how we will do next season or even progress for that matter. I know that some of you are thinking that it is Norm Chow’s first year and you have to give him time to recruit his own players and develop the program. And to be honest, I agree. I know that with his local connections he will be able to keep a lot of the great local players here in the islands and keep them from going to the mainland to play for big name teams. Maybe if he was here a few years ago, he might have even been able to recruit Manti Te’o or even keep Marcus Mariota. Could you imagine where the University of Hawaii football program would be today by having both the #1 defensive player in the country along with the #1 offensive player in the country? Sure, we may not be playing for the national championship, but I guarantee you that we would be a lot better than 3-9!
The bottom line, is that I think Chow will do the program a lot of good, but the questions still is, how much good and where will our program be in 3 or 4 years. Will he still be trying to play quarterbacks like Schroeder or insist on living in the 90’s by running the ball almost every first down? Maybe…but I hope that Chow wakes up and decides to change with the times at least a little and decide to start modernizing his offensive scheme or adjusting on defense rather than keep banging his head against the wall by sticking with the same old defensive layouts even after the opposing team is ripping us to shreds.
I am hopefully optimistic for next year and at least would like to see us recruit a better quarterback or even be 500 or better. We are a long way from being ranked in the top 10 like we were years ago when we got to play in the Sugar Bowl, but maybe this program might surprise us and turn around in the next year or two. I’m sure I speak for all of us when I say good luck Chow and we are all pulling for you and the staff to turn our program around into a national ranked team and we will continue to go the games and support the team no matter what the score is or what their record might be. We are all here with our Aloha spirit backing up our guys, but I plead to you Chow, make it at least a little easier on us to have our optimistic positive attitude and at least give us a little hope to have a successful season in whatever way we each define that. No matter what happens, The Ultimate Fundraiser is here to support ALL of our UH athletes and we are loyal fans until the end of time!
