I just got done with reading Dale Carnegie’s How To Win Friends And Influence People and here are some key points to take away:
- Don’t criticize, condemn or complain.
- Be honest and sincere with your appreciation.
- Become genuinely interested in other people, do this by really listening. This way you make the other person feel important.
- Learn to remember people’s names.
- Avoid arguments, they don’t solve anything. Show respect for the other person’s opinions, never say you’re wrong. Remember everyone has a right to their opinion.
- If you’re wrong, make sure to admit it quickly and emphatically.
- Let the other person talk and try to see things from the other person’s point of view.
- Be sympathetic with the other person’s ideas and desires.
- If you need to have someone correct something, begin with praise and appreciation for the things they do right.
- Point out people’s mistakes indirectly – I don’t totally agree with this point, I think it’s important to be direct but one can do it without hurting the other person’s ego.
- Don’t order people around.
- Be lavish in your praise and use encouragement to correct faults.
- Make the other person happy for doing what you suggest.
Those are the key points of Dale Carnegie’s book How To Win Friends And Influence People from 1936.
