Every child in America irrespective of his or her socio-economic status deserves access to a great education. Unfortunately this is not so as low-income kids don’t have the same access to a great education as their wealthier peers according to Teach For America. Their mission is to eliminate educational inequality by developing leaders that will help close the gap. Teach for America recruits individuals to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools. These individuals are trained so they have a positive impact on their students and Teach for America also fosters leadership of alumni to address this problem.
The Teach for America corps are united by a shared vision that one day all children in this nation will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education. “In the 2013-14 school year, 11,000 corps members will reach more than 750,000 students while 32,000 alumni will continue to deepen their impact as educational leaders and advocates.”
According to the Associated Press Teach for America has been in Hawaii since 2006 helping the Department of Education fill a teacher shortage in areas that need it the most. This year they will lose $1 million in state funding which sad to say, will hamper efforts to support much-needed teachers in struggling schools. Teach for America will have to cut the number of teachers that come to Hawaii by half this year. This is not going to help a school system, that is, to put it lightly not the best in the country. Quality education needs to be a priority for the state and country, and shouldn’t even be considered when budget cuts are being made considering how important the role of education is in providing a better future for the individual and the community as a whole. Perhaps we should mobilize a massive fundraiser for Hawaii’s schools to help provide quality education to every child irrespective of their socio-economic status. All, ideas and thoughts are welcome.
