It is Martin Luther King Day today, which leads us to think of equality – between genders, people of different skin colors, different sexual orientation and everything else that makes us seem different from each other. These differences are not a measure of someone’s worth, we all have a right to be here, to live, work, marry, have children and families and be treated with respect. Thankfully, we’ve come a long way from segregation but today let us make a conscious decision to throw away the lens of all prejudice against people that are different from us and treat everyone with respect. Together we can change the world!

In honor of Martin Luther King Day, here’s a part of his great I Have A Dream speech.

And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

Kopernik then publishes select projects on the website for funding. Donors fund these projects and the people at Kopernik ships the technology to the communities in need (to the far corners of the world or the last mile), where people are able to buy the products at an affordable price from local partners. The local partners repay money from the sales to Kopernik and they reinvest it in more technology.

Kopernik works with partners within each community and receives feedback regarding the impact of technology and posts photos and info on the website and let donors know what’s going on. Feedback is shared with technology producers so they can make the best technology for the developing world. What kopernik is doing is commendable, the world needs more koperniks!

Here in the US we take clean safe water for granted and the average person uses over 570 liters of water a day! Compare this to a world where 768 million people do not have access to clean safe water, which is one in ten people. People have to walk miles just to get water from a dirty pond, if not rely on expensive water vendors. Women in Africa and Asia often carry water on their heads weighing 20kg (44lbs) (UNDP: Human Development Report, 2006) and spend hours a week fetching this basic necessity for the household, oftentimes children are involved in this endeavor too. Time and energy spent on fetching water negatively impacts people’s life in other areas like earning potential and education in the case of children. On top of everything else, unsafe drinking water results in water-borne disease killing 2000 children a day.

Thankfully, organizations like WaterAid are trying to tackle this problem and last year they were able to provide 1.7 million people with safe water, please help bring clean water to children around the world, help fundraiser for this cause and donate at: http://www.wateraid.org These guys are doing a great job!

Also, we in the need to make an effort to not waste water and help in water conservation, but that’s a topic for another blog.

Doing Good: Teach for America

Every child in America irrespective of his or her socio-economic status deserves access to a great education. Unfortunately this is not so as low-income kids don’t have the same access to a great education as their wealthier peers according to Teach For America. Their mission is to eliminate educational inequality by developing leaders that will help close the gap. Teach for America recruits individuals to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools. These individuals are trained so they have a positive impact on their students and Teach for America also fosters leadership of alumni to address this problem.

The Teach for America corps are united by a shared vision that one day all children in this nation will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education. “In the 2013-14 school year, 11,000 corps members will reach more than 750,000 students while 32,000 alumni will continue to deepen their impact as educational leaders and advocates.”

According to the Associated Press Teach for America has been in Hawaii since 2006 helping the Department of Education fill a teacher shortage in areas that need it the most. This year they will lose $1 million in state funding which sad to say, will hamper efforts to support much-needed teachers in struggling schools. Teach for America will have to cut the number of teachers that come to Hawaii by half this year. This is not going to help a school system, that is, to put it lightly not the best in the country. Quality education needs to be a priority for the state and country, and shouldn’t even be considered when budget cuts are being made considering how important the role of education is in providing a better future for the individual and the community as a whole. Perhaps we should mobilize a massive fundraiser for Hawaii’s schools to help provide quality education to every child irrespective of their socio-economic status. All, ideas and thoughts are welcome.

On our recent trip to Hilo, Hawai‘i to launch a fundraiser, we visited the Pacific Tsunami Museum, coincidently, it was April 1, the anniversary of the big 1946 Tsunami – the deadliest recorded in the islands history, when there was also a Tsunami advisory because of the earthquake in Chile.

Tsunami is a Japanese word which means harbor wave, don’t be confused tho’, it is not a tidal wave since they are not caused by waves. They can happen anytime of the year and are generated by the displacement of water triggered by a seismic event. Don’t be foolish and surf the tsunami waves, stay away from the beach and ocean. Tsunamis can travel at speeds ranging from 450-500 miles per hour and can impact coastlines for hours. The waves can come ashore as a wall of water, a rapidly rising tide or a series of surf-like breakers. In Hawai‘i tsunami’s have killed more people than hurricanes, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions combined. Create a petition or support a petition at https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petitions. This a website that allows you to engage the government on issues that are closest to you. You can sign up and start a petition if your issue is not an active petition yet, and if it is, then all you’ve got to do is add your signature. If your issue meets the maximum number of signatures or signature threshold, the administration will issue a response. So take action and add your signature to issues that matter to you.

So people please support a petition that is open, create an account and add your signatures so it reaches the signature threshold in order for the administration to issue a response.

“Facilities funding has been a long-standing issue for charter schools in Hawaii. Start-up charter schools have paid the costs of their facilities from their limited operational funds since 2000. This year charter schools received about $6,000 per pupil while Department of Education schools receive an average of about $12,000 per pupil. The state public charter school commission is currently planning a facilities pilot project for the allocation of funds to various charter schools for small-scale facilities projects based, in part, on the “need and performance” of the charter schools. The commission has allocated $680,000 of 2013 federal impact aid to this pilot program despite an Attorney General opinion that federal impact aid funds cannot be used for this purpose.”
