Splash (www.splash.org) is an international nonprofit founded by Eric Stowe which is dedicated to providing clean water for kids living in urban poverty across the globe. This organization ensures safe water daily for more than 250,000 children in orphanages, schools, shelters, and hospitals in 7 countries. They’re quickly growing and will be soon be providing water for more than 1 million children. Splash is a field-leading WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene) organization focused on urban environments and the poorest children within them. Splash goes beyond just providing safe water and is focused on making sure they have systems in place that will continue and replace Splash at the local level, in other words Splash aims at putting themselves out of business in every country they work in!
While working in orphanages internationally, I became aware of the crucial need for clean water for kids on the periphery in urban areas,” Stowe explains. “Hotels and restaurants had access to clean water, but across the street, children at poor schools and orphanages did not. (Forbes.com)
Over 90% of deaths from water-borne illnesses are of children. Today the majority of the world’s poor live in urban areas and each year the population of the urban poor increases and therefore increases the number of people the urban water crisis affects. Splash’s premise for a solution is based on the fact that hotels and businesses in these urban areas of the world having access to clean water shows that there’s a clear solution. So the problem of poor people not having access to clean water becomes a mater of injustice.
Thus, Splash uses the technology and standards of world-class restaurants and hotels to bring water to kids living in urban poverty. They then educate the kids in these areas about proper hygiene and work with local organizations and businesses to provide sustainable and appropriate toilets and their maintenance.
Once all these systems are in place and supported locally, Splash hopes to exit and watch their sustainable solutions running in place in an effective manner by brining clean water and sanitation to millions of kids across the globe. And so Splash becoming obsolete and no longer being needed in an area will equate to success of their program.
