According to a press release on the UN News Center, “The World Health Organisation has estimated that seven million people on the planet are dying from pollution – that is more or less the same number of people dying from cancer,” the Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), Erik Solheim, told reporters in Geneva.

That is a pretty grave and preventable disaster. In the rush for progress, change and economic growth, the environment is ignored. And like someone long ago said, what affects the environment affects us. If the environment suffers we suffer to the point of killing ourselves.

According to WorldWildLife.Org, by 2000, the world’s chemical production had increased by 400 times since 1930. Chemicals have contributed to modern life but it  has also contributed to the contamination of our land, water bodies and the air around the world. They then accumulate in the bodies of animals and humans who absorb chemicals through the skin or ingest them in food or water. “Increasingly, there is particular concern lately about three types of chemicals: chemicals that persist in the environment and accumulate in the bodies of wildlife and people, endocrine disruptors that can interfere with hormones, and chemicals that cause cancer or damage DNA.”

If we turn a blind eye, it will only get worse, hopefully world leaders will take steps to alleviate this problem and reduce human suffering.
