Here’s a video of a super-cute creature from the deep seas, a googly-eyed stubby squid, posted to Youtube by the team from E/V Nautilus. They spotted the Stubby Squid off the coast of California at a depth of 2,950 feet.
The stubby squid (Rossia pacifica) is most closely related to cuttlefish. “This species spends life on the seafloor, activating a sticky mucus jacket and burrowing into the sediment to camouflage, leaving their eyes poking out to spot prey like shrimp and small fish.” (E/V Nautilus)
The E/V Nautilus is a 64-meter research vessel operated by the Ocean Exploration Trust. Thy also bring educators and students of all ages aboard during expeditions to offer them hands-on experience in ocean exploration, research, and communications.
