On July 11, 2016 India planted 50 million trees in under 24 hours towards a $6 billion commitment to reforest India. India has a goal of reforesting 12% of it’s land mass area and this grand endeavor makes it look simple!
The 24-hour event in which more than 800,000 people from the state of Uttar Pradesh participated. They planted trees around India’s northern states. The volunteers planted 49.3 million tree saplings from 80 different tree species sourced locally from nurseries in Uttar Pradesh.
Uttar Pradesh is India’s most populous state and it made the Guinness World Records for the most number of trees planted in a single day. The trees were planted along highways, railroad tracks, small roads, and publicly owned forests.
As part of the Paris Climate Agreement signed on Earth Day 2016, India committed to allocating $6.2 billion towards an afforestation effort across India in order to increase India’s forest cover to 235 million acres by 2030.
A concern is keeping trees healthy and alive when such a large number are planted. Lack of water, disease and the inability to care for all trees in the fragile few months after planting leads to as high mortality rates. Hopefully the monsoons will help mitigate the lack of water part and reduce the mortality rate some. This reforestation effort will be monitored with aerial photography. Plant a tree where you are and help better the quality of air, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reestablish wildlife habitat.
A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots. ~ Marcus Garvey
