The hurricane season in Hawaii runs from June 1 to November 30 every year. We had a busy hurricane season last year, which was blamed on a strong El Niño. This year is supposed to be only slightly above average according to the weather person. So how do you prepare for a hurricane in Hawaii?

The American Red Cross recommends having: water, food, first aid supplies, clothing, bedding, tools and emergency supplies, and special items at home. Keep items you would most likely need in an easy to carry container. Because of Hawaii’s remoteness and distance from the mainland US, it is recommended that you have at least a week’s worth of supplies for emergencies.

Store 1 gallon of water per person per day (for drinking, food preparation and sanitation. To purify water for safe drinking purposes, boil vigorously for 1 – 3 minutes. You can also use purification tablets available at most drug stores.

Store nonperishable food. Select items which don’t require refrigeration, preparation or cooking, and little or no water. Use perishable foods in refrigerator first. Buy dry ice and find out where you can buy it from in advance. You can use to keep foods nonperishable in your cooler or refrigerator.
