Social Progress Imperative’s Social Progress Index (SPI) measures the degree to which countries provide for the social and environmental needs of their citizens. Fifty-four variables in the areas of basic human needs, foundations of wellbeing, and opportunity to progress show the performance of nations.
Basic human needs are defined as things such as nutrition, access to medical care, water and sanitation. Foundations for wellbeing are things such as access to basic knowledge and environmental quality, opportunity is things such as personal freedoms, tolerance and inclusion.
The 2016 index includes 133 countries representing 94 percent of the world population.
