We at The Ultimate Fundraiser love stories of triumph – especially when they happen in dire circumstances. And here’s one of those stories we’d like to share with you. We see the affects of climate change all around the world and one of them is drought. Ethiopia is experiencing a drought right now, which is the worst in 50 years which has left millions hungry. But it was really exciting to see watch this video where a little village came alive and turned lush green thanks to an experiment.
On the hills of Tigray, Ethiopia, when it rains the water takes the soil with it and in the process of rushing downhill, the water is lost, it does not seep into the ground to replenish underground wells. So the wells go dry and the community is left with no water to farm the land. This process almost turned the land into desert and the government was considering moving the farmers but decided to try an experiment which would turn things around. They built dams, ponds and embankments to slow the flow of water. All of this helped keep the ground moist and the seepage of water into the ground. And the best part was that it was a community effort.
This is an amazing story of how one of the poorest parts of the world without a lot of resources was able to turn things around, it is experiments like these that will provide solutions to the effects of climate change. It is a beautiful story of hope and resilience. If you’d like to watch the video, here it is.
