According to the World Health Organization 1 billion people across the world live with disabilities. Google.org, Google’s philanthropic division has pledged $20 million to help improve their lives. The money will be used across 29 programs working on disability technologies. The programs fall into five categories of disabilities – hearing, mobility, cognitive, vision and communication.
As part of the Google Impact Challenge: Disabilities, they have made this monetary contribution to 29 grantees to help address accessibility challenges all over the world — and are now helping them bring their projects to life.” (Google.org)
Below are some examples of what grantees are working on:
- e-NABLE designs and creates 3D printed prosthetics.
- World Wide Hearing is developing an inexpensive tool for health workers anywhere to screen for hearing loss.
- Wheelmap is creating a global dataset of accessible locations for people with disabilities.
