Michael Kors was presented with the McGovern-Dole Leadership award in recognition of his work with the UN World Food Programme (WFP). He partnered with UNWFP in 2012 to help raise awareness and funding for those suffering from hunger and malnutrition in countries across the globe. Kors launched the Watch Hunger Stop campaign. As a part of this campaign proceeds from the sale of Michael Kors watches helped provide over 13 million meals to school-meal programmes in Cambodia, Mozambique, Nicaragua and Uganda. Vice President Joe Biden presented Kors with the award.
According to the Washington Post “Early in his career, Kors focused on hunger in his hometown. The New York-based non-profit, God’s Love We Deliver, which provides meals for those who are ill, last year dedicated a building to the designer who, along with his company, has raised some $20 million for the organization. But as his reach as a designer has expanded so has his philanthropy.” (washingtonpost.com)
Kors also received the Oliver R. Grace Award for Distinguished Service in Advancing Cancer Research from the Cancer Research Institute, a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing immune system-based treatments for cancer in 2010.
