The Harpo Foundation was established by artist Edward Levine in 2006 to support artists who are under-recognized in their fields. And the foundation is currently accepting applications to its Grants for Visual Artists program. Grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded to under-recognized visual artists age 21 or older.
You must be an under-recognized visual artist, be a citizen of the United States and be at least aged 21. For complete program guidelines and application instructions, see the Harpo Foundation website.
The Foundation’s grant program awards 7-10 grants annually and they are made directly to artists to support their development and to non-profit organizations in support artists. According to their website “the Foundation also supports two residency fellowship programs. The Native American Residency Fellowship program provides residency opportunities at the Vermont Studio Center to support the development of artists and the potential for inter-cultural dialog. The Emerging Artist Residency Fellowship program supports residency opportunities at the Santa Fe Art Institute for visual artists 25 years and older who need time and space to explore ideas and start new projects.”
For those of you that thought of Oprah’s Harpo Productions, no, the Harpo Foundation is not affiliated with Oprah Winfrey or her company.
