Eleven-year-old Mikaela Ulmer, from Austin Texas, went from fearing bees after being stung as a young child to learning more about them and their dander of going extinct, started a business to save the bees. She also just struck a deal with Whole Foods to sell her BeeSweet Lemonade in 55 regional stores in four states and depending on how if it does well at these introductory stores, they will be carrying it at stores nationwide.
It should be no surprise that she got her start with a lemonade stand called Me & The Bees in 2009. BeeSweet Lemonade is made from mint, flaxseed, lemons and honey – her great-grandmother Helen’s recipe. Mikaila donates part of her revenues to bee rescue foundations and she also supports the Sustainable Food Center, Texas Beekeepers Association and Heifer International.
Mikaila appeared with her father Theo on ABC’s Shark Tank in 2015 where she scored a deal with Daymond John for $60,000. In an interview with NBC Mikaila quoted Albert Einstein: “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would only have four years of life left.” Mikaila leads workshops on how to save the honeybees.
Mikaela is an inspiration to all aspiring young entrepreneurs and even more so because of the social cause behind it, way to go Mikaela!
