Google is funding the expansion of a program from the non-profit CODE2040 to create more opportunities for African-American and Latino entrepreneurs beyond Silicon Valley. Minority entrepreneurs in seven cities will receive a $40,000 yearly stipend and free office space to build their start-ups that build pave the way to technology for minorities within their own communities. The announcement was made by CODE2040 founder and CEO Laura Weidman Powers on Saturday at SXSW.
“CODE2040 is a nonprofit organization that creates pathways to educational, professional, and entrepreneurial success in technology for underrepresented minorities with a specific focus on Blacks and Latino/as. CODE2040 aims to close the achievement, skills, and wealth gaps in the United States. Our goal is to ensure that by the year 2040 – when the US will be majority-minority – Blacks and Latino/as are proportionally represented in America’s innovation economy as technologists, investors, thought leaders, and entrepreneurs.” (CODE2040.ORG)
CODE2040 is trying to close the racial gap in the field of technology. As an example, at Google, seven out of 10 employees are men. Most employees are white (60%) and Asian (31%). Latinos and African Americans made by 3% and 2% respectively.
