Google’s Lunar XPRIZE hopes to encourage space entrepreneurs to create a new era of affordable access to the Moon and beyond. Google Lunar XPRIZE has reignited the public’s interest in the Moon by highlighting the technological achievements of the competition’s global teams. They also hope to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, space explorers, and adventurers.
The competition’s $30 million prize will be given to teams that land a privately funded rover on the moon, travel 500 meters, and transmit back high definition video and images.
- The first team to successfully complete this mission will get the $20 million dollar Grand Prize.
- And the second team to successfully complete the mission will be given $5 million dollars.
To win either of these prizes, teams must have a major part of their mission or 90% of the costs funded through private sources. Teams have until the end of 2016 to come up with a verified launch contract to remain in the competition and complete their mission by the end of 2017. There are sixteen teams currently in the running hoping to make history.
