Have you ever wondered what makes us humans truly happy? It is wealth? Success? Travel? A study on happiness done over a span of 75 years attempts to answer some of theses questions. In this TED Talk, the current director of the 75-year-old study on adult development, Robert Waldinger shares important lessons learned from the study as well as some wisdom on how to build a fulfilling and long life.
Waldinger talks about a recent survey of millennials where they were asked what their most important life goals were and over 80 percent said that a major life goal for them was to get rich, and 50% of them said they also wanted to become famous.
Since 1938, they tracked the lives of two groups of men for the study. The first group were sophomores at Harvard College. And the second group was a group of boys from Boston’s poorest neighborhoods, and they were specifically chosen because of this background. They interviewed them year after year, not just through questionnaires. They also met them, talked to their families, etc. in other words, it was an intensive in-depth study.
The clearest message they got from the study is that good relationships keep us happier and healthier, not wealth or materialistic things. I didn’t want to give too much away, you can listen to the talk below.
