On Tuesday, January 19, Microsoft Philanthropies, announced that they will be donating $1 billion in cloud computing resources to 70,000 non-profits, university researchers and NGOs worldwide over the next 3 years. Microsoft Corp. CEO Satya Nadella announced a new three-part initiative to make sure that Microsoft’s cloud computing resources serve the public good.
Specific elements of the new initiative include:
- Serving the broad needs of the nonprofit community.
- Expanding access to cloud resources for faculty research in universities.
- Reaching new communities with last-mile connectivity and cloud services.
Microsoft will be providing nonprofits with better access to Microsoft Cloud Services and also build upon their commitment to making cutting-edge technology available at no or low cost to organizations working on solving some of society’s toughest problems.
The press release said that Cloud computing is an important resource for unlocking the secrets held by data which can create new insights and result in breakthroughs for science and technology and economic and social challenges. They consequently deliver better human services. Another benefit is improved communications and problem-solving, which helps organizations be more productive and efficient.
Microsoft formed Microsoft Philanthropies (@MSPhilanthropic) in December 2015, which is focused on driving digital inclusion and empowerment around the world. To read the complete press release, please click here.
