At the age of thirty Patrick O’Brien, a New York City DJ, internet personality, and filmmaker was diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig’s Disease, and told that he had 2-5 years to live. It’s now ten years later, and as the film’s title TransFatty Lives indicates, O’Brien is still very much alive and has produced the deeply moving and funny story of his battle with the disease. His experience is presented in the form of a video letter to his young son.

Transfatty Lives

O’Brien began filming just as his symptoms started appearing, then through losing his ability to walk, move his arms, swallow or even breath. Patrick has completed this film by typing directions to his editors with the movements of his pupils. “Forcefully lacking self-pity, he captures the emotion, humor, and absurdity of real life as he makes art, gets political, falls in love, fathers a son, and fights extreme depression and paranoia.” (HIFF)
