The International Astronomical Union’s (IAU) General Assembly takes place from Aug 3-14 in Honolulu, Hawaii and more than 3,500 astronomers from around the world are expected to attend. The venue for the conference is Hawaii Convention Center. This will be the first General Assembly to be held in Hawaii and the first in the United States since 1988. Founded in 1919, the IAU is the world’s largest professional body for astronomers. The IAU holds a conference every three years. The University of Hawaii and the Institute for Astronomy are helping to organize local events but neither is hosting the gathering.

The conference will enable the astronomers to share knowledge and new discoveries, and they will vote on important astronomical science issues. For example, the IAU general assembly voted to demote Pluto from a planet to a dwarf planet at its 2006 conference in Prague. Most of the conference is open only to attendees but there will be several free public events including a talk on Polynesian voyaging.
