Ho’okele Elementary School, Oahu’s brand new school located across the street from Kapolei High School will be opening its doors today to welcome students to the first day of school. The school will serve children in grades K-5 and the campus was designed with input from school level administrators and staff who will be working at the site. D.R. Horton Hawaii provided the land and the 2013 Legislature provided funds to the tune of $40 million for the construction of the school.
The groundbreaking ceremony for Ho’okele Elementary took place on April 3, 2014. The 78,404-square-foot school campus is comprised of seven buildings built around a central courtyard and it includes a library, cafeteria and a dedicated arts and science building. Ho’okele’s campus features air-conditioned classrooms, learning gardens, flexible learning spaces, a covered play court and a wireless network throughout all buildings. The school meets the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for Schools 2009 standards. Ho’okele Elementary also includes an onsite bio-retention and native landscaping. There are multiple drop-off entries for parents and school buses. Ho’okele’s campus has expansion areas for increased enrollment if needed.
Ho’okele is the Hawaii Department of Education’s 256th active public school campus. Ho’okele’s principal is Laureen Dunn, who played an important role in the design of the school. To learn more about Ho’okele Elementary, click here.
