The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research is a nonprofit that is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease (PD). Michael J. Fox announced his young-onset Parkinson’s disease in 1998 and went on to establish the foundation in 2000. The Foundation has since become the largest nonprofit funder of Parkinson’s disease research in the world. Fox has been called “the most credible voice on Parkinson’s research in the world” by the New York Times.
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic and progressive movement disorder. The symptoms continue and worsen over time. Nearly 1.5 million people in the US live with Parkinson’s disease. There is presently no cure but there are treatment options such as medication and surgery to manage symptoms.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research has funded over $450 million to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease. The foundation is well organized and researched and has teams from both the science and business worlds. The foundation invests 52% of it’s time into altering the disease, 22% into defining the disease and its biomarkers, 18% into untreated symptoms, and 8% goes to various research tools. You can help by simply making a donation to fundraising and raising awareness or even participating in a clinical trial.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation awards grants to ensure that the most promising research avenues are well funded, explored and result in medications at pharmacy shelves. To make a donation click here.
