According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the number of hungry people on our planet has fallen to 795 million in 2015 from more than a billion 25 years ago. This progress was made despite the growth of the world population to 1.9 billion since 1990.
The FAO State of Food Insecurity Report said that the most progress in reducing hunger was shown in countries in East Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, which was in part due to economic growth in these regions that did not exclude the poor, political stability and investments in agriculture.
The report also found that most of the countries monitored have met the UN’s Millennium Development Goals to reduce undernourishment by half by 2015. The agency said that improved agricultural productivity, food vouchers and school meal programs had the most impact in reducing hunger. Sub-Saharan Africa had the highest levels of undernourishment in the world, affecting 1 in 4 people. To read the complete report, click here.
