Surfing The Nations, founded by Tom Bauer, is a Hawaii nonprofit that integrates surfing and humanitarian work. Their motto is simple “Surfers Giving Back.” They began in 1997 at the grassroots level in Kalihi Valley, Honolulu. Many of the programs and outreaches began with just a few people.
Backed by volunteers and donations, Surfing The Nations has taken the next step — to revitalize the Central Oahu town of Wahiawa. They broke ground on a new 4,664 square-foot two-story facility for community outreach. “The nonprofit started construction last May on its Community Outreach and Training Center on South Kamehameha Highway, located next to its 56 Ohai St. headquarters.” “They acquired 40,000 square feet of property over the last five years, with purchases totaling about $4.2 million for eight adjacent 5,000-square-foot properties.” (Pacific Business News)
The state of Hawaii, City and County of Honolulu, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Walmart and First Hawaiian Bank are a few among the organizations that have donated to the new facility. There are many ways you can get involved with Surfing The Nations – you can volunteer with them, participate in an international outreach trip or be a financial partner.
