Think of the Good Country Index as a report card that shows you how every country contributes to the greater good of humanity based on these variables: science and technology, culture, international peace and security, world order, planet and climate, prosperity and equality, health and well being. Policy advisor Simon Anholt introduced the Good Country Index hoping to inspire countries to think in a more expansive and unselfish manner encouraging governments to look into the global impact of their policies.
In his TED talk Anholt says that in a climate of globalization we’re also victims of the problems connected to it, so we need to globalize the solutions to counter it. He hopes the Good Country Index will influence governments because the better a country’s image is the more money they’ll make, attracting more investors and tourists and as a consequence becoming more competitive. Anholt clarifies that the Good Country Index is not a moral judgment of countries. This Index is based on 35 internationally based studies and uses data from organizations such as the UN and The World Bank.
He urges governments to start behaving and citizens to use the Good Country Index to influence our politicians into making better choices for the planet as whole as we live in a connected world.
Countries at the top of the report think outwardly (in a more unselfish manner) and make the world better or fairer contributing to the greater good of humanity. The more you collaborate and change to becoming a contributor and not a burden on the world, the more competitive you become and it’s a win-win. So, who’s #1? Ireland! followed by Finland and Switzerland. Ireland contributes more to the greater good of humanity than any other country in the world despite their economic problems showing that their government also focuses on their global responsibility while focusing on their top domestic issues. The US is #21
How much is your country or state contributing to making the world a better place or is it a burden or does it fall somewhere in between? As Anholt says let us use the Good Country Index to urge our politicians to follow the example of Ireland and make us proud to come from a good country, a good state and good community.
