If you take a look at these numbers above, also add in that where most fundraisers have about a 10%-30% sales rate, we have an 80%-90% sales rate to our customers. So, not only are our overall sales higher, but our average sales per customer are over $33 per person. So, when doing your next fundraiser really consider if that higher percentage is really worth it and if you feee biggest misconception in fundraising, is that the higher your profit % (or profit margin), the more money you make during your fundraiser. Yes, you might make a higher percentage, but that doesn’t mean you raise more money overall. Many people think that if they have higher percentage on the product you sell, the easier it will be to reach your fundraising goals. That simply isn’t true. In fact, it is exactly the opposite.

Yes, it may seem enticing to hear a high percentage return on your sales, but what that usually means, is that the product price must be raised in order to make that large amount of profit. Most fundraising companies take products and double the price so you can make a 40%, 50%, or even higher profit margin. Very few products have this type of profit margin in the everyday business world, much less in the fundraising world. And most fundraising products are food which are even more impossible to see those type of product margins without raising the price substantially.

You have to remember, that most organizations who get fundraising products are getting them from a vendor, who gets them from another vendor, who gets them from another vendor. By the time it’s all said and done, the money has to pass through 3, 4, 5 hands and maybe more before you sell those products to the customers who end up using or consuming the products. Very few people, organizations or companies get the products from the direct source and food especially, has the smallest profit margin.

Be careful though, anymore than that, you will just complicate the process and even worse, make it confusing for your customers. Second, we are using products from the same state and the same area the fundraiser is being done. People love to buy local products and support their own community. Third, we utilizing products that have a long shelf life so that the customers can buy in bulk without worrying about spoilage. And fourth, most importantly, we are LOWERING our product prices. Not only do we lower our product prices, we lower our prices so much, that our prices are even better than all the other local grocery stores! Why do we do this you ask???

In this day and age, people are used to buying over-priced fundraising products knowing that even though they can go down the street and get it cheaper at their local store, they are buying just to support the cause. Most of the time they might only buy one or two items max just to be nice, or even a lot of people just decide not to buy. This then decreases your odds of selling and heavily decreases your sales. So, no matter how high your profit margin is, if you can only sell a few of those products, you won’t be making very much money. Also, you are technically “ripping off” your family, friends and customers that are buying from you. And remember, if you are doing one fundraiser for school, church, a charity, a sports team or a family member, odds are that you will be doing more fundraisers and asking the same exact people you asked before. And believe me, they will remember the products you sold before, the prices AND how many times you have asked them to buy.

So, let’s turn that model on its head and please while you are reading this, think about not only the way your family, friends and customers will feel, but also yourself when we try to change the way you look at fundraising…

Let’s take our (The Ultimate Fundraiser’s) model of fundraising. Instead of taking a product and doubling the price or even raising the price to increase your profit margin, what would happen if you lowered the price. Not only a little, but more than enough to beat any of the local stores in your area, no matter what the product may be. Let’s take a normal average fundraising product that normally costs $7 in the store and that you would get wholesale for $3.50 and would normally sell in your fundraiser for $8-$10. Yes, you may make 40%, 50%, or maybe even more, but how many people would actually you know would buy it? And not only how many people would buy it, but how much would each person buy?

Like I said before, most people won’t buy and even if you are a good salesman and you get a lot of people to buy, they will usually only buy one or two items. BUT, what happens if you took that item and sold it for $5 to your customers and were able to GUARANTEE that you have the very BEST price for that product. Sure you may make a smaller profit margin overall, but A LOT more people will buy from you and more importantly, they will buy A LOT more than just one or two items! Wouldn’t you? Also, when they realize that they are getting a quality product at the very BEST price, they will buy it in bulk! On top of that, the next time you see them to hit them up for your next fundraiser, they will not only be happy to buy, but they will buy even more product than the last time!
